For those of you that don’t know Target sponsors FREE Friday nights at the Museum of Modern Art. A spectacular bargain given that a trip to the MOMA will ordinarily run you $20 - unless, of course, you are disabled or elderly. The rest of us are screwed. That being said, thanks to Target’s branded generosity I was able to check out the new exhibit: Matisse: Radical Invention
I won’t lie, the exhibit was interesting and, obviously, nice to look at but I never quite got that moment where I gasped because I was truly moved or intrigued. There wasn’t much space for interpretation, although there were a lot of really interesting techniques used, which were fun to note. It was nice to appreciate but overall I left thinking, “Well, that was quite nice.” “Nice” doesn’t move me so much. Is that blasphemous?
Anyway, here were my favorites:
View of Notre Dame (Paris, Quai Saint-Michele)

Pretty cool the amount of depth that was achieved from, well, lines. Go see it up close! He accomplishes a lot with really fierce brushstrokes, scraping and letting his initial lines be seen through the paint. It feels a little like an archeology dig.
Portrait of Yvonne Landsberg

Alright, this one I found fascinating. It’s such a serene portrait in some ways, but it was created so…violently, for lack of a better word. I loved it. It felt very very electric, to me at least.
Anyway, if you’ve seen this exhibit and disagree with me violently or think I’m a philistine or a complete idiot, please let me know! But suggest some reading please.
